Waihi 2022: 110 years commemoration
On 12 November 1921 was ‘Black Tuesday’, when Waihi miner Fred Evans was killed while on strike with 1,500 of his workmates.
The Waihi Miners’ Strike was a pivotal point in Aotearoa New Zealand’s industrial relations history and every year we remember Fred and the significant impact of the strike.
110 years later, we have wins to celebrate.
The introduction of Fair Pay Agreements will hopefully mean a return to some real worker power that has been lost in the decades since the Employment Contracts Act gutted unionism.
Join us on 12 November 2022 to look back at our history and look forward to our future. We’ll have interesting speeches about the history and our current opportunities, as well as great food and entertainment. This is an event for the whole Labour Movement wh?nau!
Saturday, 12 November 2022
12:00pm to 4:00pm Waihi Memorial Hall, Waihi
Please send your RSVP to campaigns@etu.nz before Saturday 29 October and feel free to invite others from the Labour Movement who might be interested.
Kia ora
I am now living in the Bay of Plenty. As a long-time union person I would like to attend the Fred Evans Memorial in Waihi this November.
I can find no information about where this might be held this year, or even if it will be held.
I would be grateful if you are able to tell me anything, or point to where I might find out.
Many thanks. .
Not sure if it is an annual event Ian, suggest emailing E Tu union at campaigns@etu.nz
