Arrival is from 5:30pm, bar and snacks will be available.
Then we will sit down for a 47 minute documentary film ‘Before You Eat’, which exposes the exploitation and inhumane conditions endured by Indonesian crew members on foreign fishing vessels. The film was produced by the Indonesia Migrant Workers Union, and supported by Greenpeace Indonesia.
Following the film, there will be a panel and open discussion with a representative from the Maritime Union of New Zealand, the Indonesia Migrant Workers Union, and Destructive Fishing Watch Indonesia – full details to be confirmed.
All proceeds from the night will go to support UnionAID’s project with Destructive Fishing Watch Indonesia (DFW), which aims to address forced labour and human trafficking in Indonesia’s fisheries by establishing National Fishers Center posts, educating communities about labour violations, and strengthening union groups for collective action.

It’s no secret that Indonesian migrant fishers in distant water fishing vessels are commonly subjected to human rights abuses and fisheries crimes. But, someone sitting down to eat in a high end restaurant will probably have no idea. Before You Eat connects the dot from ocean to plate and reveals the true cost of seafood.
